Relay for Life

Back in May we participated in Maumelle's Relay for Life (biggest relay in AR). James was the team captian for the Cancer Kickin' Cowboys team. (We have participated for several years, but he took on the role of Captain as a project for his LeadAR [leadership development group].)
Relay for Life is an 18 hour event where team members raise money for Cancer Research for the American Cancer Society. We held fundraisers, like a garage sale, prior to the actual Relay event. Then at 6pm on Friday, May 18th, all the teams gather at the soccer fields and set up booths. The relay starts and the goal is to have a team member walking the track the whole time to represent that cancer never sleeps. Teams sale treats (we sold Jeanie Peirson's cinnamon rolls and water bottles) and participate in other activities through out the 18 hours. There is also a silent auction.
At 9pm they have an hour walk where they turn off the lights and the track pathway is lit by lumenarios. Each one has been paid for and represents someone we have lost to cancer or who is a cancer survivor. All cancer survivors are invited to take that first lap. James was dedicating his time to his co-worker Dr. H. Wallace Goddard, who has battled bladder cancer this past year.

Giddy up for a cure...

James was the top individual earner for this year and our team was 2nd overall in how much money was raised. Jordan and Kammie stayed all night long with their Dad. Zack, Spencer, and Sidnie also spent time there.
May the fight against Cancer soon be victorious for ALL!
