On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day our youth had the opportunity of helping with a service project at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School here in LR on Martin Luther King street. We got up at the crack of dawn only to spend lots of time waiting to actually serve. We put in 4 plus hours and did like 1 1/2 hours of work.
We gathered at the church at 7:30 am. We were there for about 45 minutes. Then we had to stand in line to fill out volunteer forms when we finally got to MLK Elementary. We got assigned to project 4. We were ready to get to work, but NO...we had to gather in the cafeteria. We waited their for a good while and then they finally started. We listened to words of MLK, Jr. and were introduced to the principal, and lots of other volunteer staff. Then we had to go through a ridiculous "warm up." Finally we were split into project groups and sent to our rooms. We were ready to go, but we still had to wait. We gathered in our assigned room and had to go around the circle of people and introduce ourselves with our name and an adjective that describes us that started with the same letter as our name. They explained the project and I was rearing to go. Then another group was blocking our paint, and our leaders just said to wait. I wanted to run screaming from the room. Instead, I helped move my way in to get the table with our paint on it and move it to where we could get to it and actually START.
We were in the Science room to paint on the walls. I started with the letters in The Scientific Method and moved to the microscope and books, etc.
